Artist statement:

"Still is my response to a study of Eastern philosophy and religion. Though the book is based on personal interpretation and experience, there are specific links to both the history and philosophy from which it was conceived. Designed as a complete experience, it leads from the unfolding of the cover through the colors, into the patterns, the paradox, the stillness….

The book is arranged on four different levels: by color, by country, by thought, and by number…. There are thirty-two poems, eight in each of the four sections (the Eightfold way: right views, right inten

tions, right speech, right action, right profession, right effort, right watchfulness, right concentration). Each section of eight is again divided in two sections of four (the Four Noble Truths) by the ‘lace’ papers. The patterns of the four ‘lace’ papers progress from diamond to star to scallop to circle."

Friendly Book Tour # 1

I started this blog because I love publications and had the experience of overseeing a magazine in college. When I graduated and was no longer creating something of my own, I started collecting creative publications to gather ideas in case another opportunity arrives . So far all the book tours on this blog are books from my personal collection. But many of my friends are also book collectors. They all have extensive libraries in a wide range of topics and focuses. I soon realized that I don't have to purchase all the books I want to photograph, I just have to raid, um visit, my friend's library. Here is to the first post of its kind.

My best friend, Diane, brought this book with her on our "staycation" and shared it with me while we were siting in my car waiting for my sister in Irvine. She got this publication as a gift. I just couldnt believe how perfect of a gift it was.
I wish I had gotten it for her (and maybe a copy for myself).

Made with love from Hawaii

My dear friend Julianne Meebo Hing sent this "postcard" to me from her family vacation in Hawaii. It was such a delight to open. She made the envelope using the cover of a Japanese magazine based in Hawaii. We know that many Japanese Americans live in Hawaii but tons of Japanese tourist can also be found on the island. There is this whole sub-culture of Japanese tourist magazines, guides, shops, events all catered to them. This letter/package she sent to me started off as a postcard, then expanded to this three-page notes on life, packed neatly with annotated tear-sheets of the tourist magazine, a pirate's map of where to find best wedding loot, and a menu with a post-it noting the spelling of "shave ice" (vs. shaved ice).

This is love from one magazine lover to another.
